Powell Injury Dampens Today's Duel vs. Lewis // Lowered Expectations in High Jump

Today was the day Carl Lewis and Mike Powell were to begin theirmuch-anticipated and eagerly awaited High Noon shootout in the men'slong jump.

Today will be a day Powell hopes he can take two steps withoutwincing in pain.

Powell aggravated a chronic hamstring injury Monday afternoon atthe practice track adjacent to the Estadi Olimpic. The pain startedin his lower back and spread to the right leg. He was unable to workout Tuesday.

The qualifying round in the jump is today. The finals aretomorrow.
