VIC: New evidence on newsmen s deaths at Balibo = 2

The academic, who did not want to be identified, said the information was passed to him by
an Indonesian intelligence officer dressed in civilian clothes and carrying a brief case.

"They could not let the newsmen out because of the information they had," the academic
said.

He said the intelligence officer, whom he did not name, had since returned to uniform
service and was involved with affairs in East Timor.

The academic said an Australian tourist in East Timor just before the Indonesian invasion
had told him he had seen 100 jeeps carrying Indonesian soldiers in the area a month before the
official invasion.

"I didn't speak about any of this at the time because I was deeply involved in research,"
he said.
